Mapuche cultureAbstract
This article focuses on the view about the Mapuche culture, first on the discourse analysis of articles about this culture in "Icarito ", a booklet published by the newspaper La Tercera and which is a complementary text of the school subject History of Chile. Besides, this work also focuses 011 the discourse - concerning this indigenous group- of the parents of elementary school students of Temuco, Chile, who use this booklet. The most relevant findings show that the contents of the "Icarito" texts reveal prejudices and stereotypes about the Mapuche people. Examples of these are negative attributions such as "violent", "savage", "uneducated", "without culture", and "differentiated due to their physical appearance ". These prejudiced expressions are reproduced by the parents who help their children with their homework promoting discriminatory attitudes towards the members of the Mapuche culture.
