The aim of this article is to reflect on the role of schools in nationalisation processes. Without denying the importance of the role played by education systems, it is considered that a “top-down” approach does not pay attention to the process by which the recipients of this action receive it, integrate it and make it their own. Therefore, after present some relevant contributions that have helped to build an interpretative framework on the nationalising role of the school, it is suggested to take into consideration other aspects related to the shaping of national identity in students. It is proposed to pay attention to teaching practice, the psychological development of children and their knowledge of their social environment, and the importance of the social and political context in this process.
