Knowing the level of reading comprehension of those who start a university career in Ecuador will help to design and implement educational policies in the university environment that help students approach it, acquire knowledge and their respective professional competences. In this context, The “PROLEC-SE” test was applied to a sample of 85 students from the first cohort of a humanistic career in a private Higher Education Institution. The data indicate that an important group of students in the test presents a low level of reading comprehension and a significant group presents reading comprehension problems. The results divided into two groups - students who come from public schools and students who come from private schools - indicate a lower percentage of students with low level or reading comprehension problems in contrast to those who come from public schools.
