While the gender gap in education persists, it is even more pronounced in single-mother families, hindering the achievement of SDGs 4 and 5. Case studies conducted in the department of Santander, Colombia, and the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, Spain, examine the educational and training levels of mothers in single-mother households. Through a comparative analysis, the aim is to highlight the importance of social policies to, at a minimum, reduce the gender gap in access to education. The specific situation of single mothers, as the sole providers of resources in their homes, places them in a position of urgent need to enter the labour market (either as employees or as self-employed business owners), making it difficult or impossible to continue their education and training.
